The official mobile-based apps of government-run transport corporations seem to be lost in the clutter of software applications on online platforms.
Users are bombarded by applications in the digital market sporting official logos and brand names but made by "unofficial developers." The official BMTC app has seen 50,000 downloads in less than four months after it was launched to make it more passenger-friendly.
This mobile-based app, which is available on Google Play Store, has also received a positive feedback from users in locating bus stops, buses on routes and as a trip planner.
But what apparently confuses people is the presence of seven mobile-based apps on the same digital platform with BMTC's name and three of them carrying BMTC's official logo. Similarly, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) too has developed a new mobile app called Namma Metro. It not only locates nearby Metro stations but also provides information related to parking, train frequency, route map, fare details and more.
This app has received a user rating of 4.5 and 10,000 downloads in a short span. But there is no indication to show that it's an official app except the logo, which is also used by other developers. On the other hand, there are at least 15 apps related to Bangalore Metro. Of these, two apps carry the official logo.
In addition, the Android market has many mobile applications related to KSRTC, the large state transport service. Of the eleven apps on this digital market, five carry both the brand name and official logo of KSRTC. Downloading the right app is tricky as there are two apps with one lakh downloads each.
KSRTC managing director Rajender Kumar Kataria said he was aware of the issue.
Meanwhile, BMTC managing director Ekroop Caur said: "We do not have any issue with developers who list an app with the BMTC brand name and logo, as long as it does not harm us. We have now revamped our app with superior content, which was not so earlier. As the official app has downloads, it will automatically pop up in the list," she pointed out.
BMRCL managing director Pradeep Singh Kharola said the corporation is further working on the app and would include "official" sign for people to easily identify it.
