In a great escape, an 11-year-old boy managed to extricate himself from the claws of a python, which had partially swallowed him, at Kolake in Bantwal taluk on Tuesday evening.

The brave boy is Vaishak, son of Suresh of Kolake Kudoor and a student of Adarsh English Medium School.

It all happened when Vaishak was returning home around 6.30 pm after visiting his grandparents' house nearby, which is surrounded by bushes and trees. Just a little away from his home, a python, which was probably on a tree, fell on him and owing to the python's weight, he fell on the ground.

Soon, the python started coiling itself around Vaishak's leg and tried to swallow him. Even before the boy could realise what was happening to him, the python had almost swallowed his leg. When the boy tried to free his leg, the python tried to bite his hand. However, the boy, determined not to be scared, decided to blind the snake with the help of a stone. "I thought if I blinded the snake, it would not be able to see me and so hit hard at the snake's eyes," he told the doctor in hospital.
Soon afterwards, the snake loosened its grip and the boy claimed that he pulled his leg out from the snake's mouth. At this point, his cousin, who was passing by, saw him writhing in pain and summoned help.

His parents rushed him to a hospital on BCRoad, where he was referred to Fr Muller Hospital in Mangaluru. The boy is recuperating.

"I had seen a python in my neighbourhood in the past. So I was sure that it was a python which attacked me," said Vaishak. "I gathered all my strength to save myself from the clutches of the python. The battle with the python lasted for about 20 minutes," he said.

Dr Uday Kumar, Medical Superintendent of Fr Muller Hospital, told DH that the boy suffered wounds when the python's fangs grazed his thighs and hands." Vaishak has a lot of snake bite marks all over his leg and a hand.
