During the general meeting of the Kodagu Zilla Panchayat at Old Fort Hall on Wednesday a resolution was passed after an unanimous decision by the members to urge the government to announce the entire district as drought-hit.

There has been 300 mm less rain in the district compared to the previous year. This will result in scarcity of fodder for cattle in summer. Only Virajpet and Madikeri taluks have been enlisted by the government as drought-hit.

The entire district should be declared as drought-hit, urged the members of the Zilla Panchayat, irrespective of party barriers.

Member Bananda Prathyu said there was scarcity of drinking water in the villages during last year. The officials must see to it that the same problem does not occur this time and the drinking water projects must be completed on time. Another member Bopanna said there was a need to compensate farmers towards crop loss.

Member Poornima Gopal said the students have been facing difficulties due to lack of basic facilities in government schools. Education and Health Standing Committee president Shashi Subramani assured to take necessary steps towards clearing encroachment in school property.

Zilla panchayat vice president Lokeshwari Gopal said, "When the gram panchayat development officers are not responding to the requested made by the elected representatives, what about the common people?"

Member Mahesh urged for an action against the dumping of waste from Kerala at the border area Makutta.

Meeting
It was decided during the meeting to conduct a meeting at Virajpet regarding providing basic facilities to people belonging to scheduled tribes. Zilla panchayat president Harish suggested conducting the meeting in the chairmanship of the deputy commissioner, to which all members agreed.

Saita Poonaccha said
that even though there are eligible people, the department has not been providing the benefits. K P Chandrakala urged to control the preparation of illicit liquor in the tribal hamlets in Titimati.
