Indian carriers operating from Ahmedabad to the Gulf countries need not fly over Pakistan airspace and take a new route over Arabian Sea to "save fuel".
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said on Tuesday that the straightening of the route will help saving on fuel and it has nothing to do with any political issue.
The comments came against the backdrop of increasing tension between India and Pakistan over Jammu and Kashmir.
"The AAI has straightened the route from Ahmedabad to Gulf which will save on fuel. On the existing route from Ahmedabad to gulf, our carriers fly over pakistan airspace. However, on new route, they will not fly over Pakistan airspace," a senior DGCA official said.
The official said there are no political issues in connection with the decision. The straightening of the route comes amid requests from some domestic carriers operating flights to the Gulf.
