Members of the minority communities from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan living in India on long-term visas (LTV) have reason to cheer.

For, the government has decided to allow them to open bank accounts and purchase property for self-occupation.

These facilities will be available to Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians hailing from the neighbouring countries.

Over the past two years, the government has made certain provisions like replacing
the renunciation certificate with an affidavit, granting LTV for five years instead of two and
providing facilities for education and employment.

The latest soft measures include permission to open bank accounts, purchase of property for self-occupation, take up self-employment, besides suitable accommodation for business ventures, perceived to be safe from a security point of view.

These minorities are also entitled to a driving licence, PAN card and Aadhaar number, besides free movement within the state of their residence.

Transfer of LTV papers from one state to another is also allowed.DH had in April reported about the government's plan to extend these facilities to minority communities from Pakistan.

The easing of norms precludes the need to obtain prior RBIapproval for buying a house and opening a bank account.
