In what is expected to be an extensive briefing on the surgical strikes across the Line of Control (LoC), top government officials, including the director general of military operations (DGMO), will be giving a 360-degree overview of the operations by the armed forces to a parliamentary panel on Tuesday.
Foreign secretary S Jaishankar, home secretary Rajiv Mehrishi, defence secretary G Mohan Kumar and DGMO Lt Gen Ranbir Singh will brief the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs on the strikes and its implications on domestic as well as foreign policies. This will be the second such briefing in the past five days.
Earlier, on Friday, Vice Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen Bipin Rawat briefed the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence on the surgical strikes, which have stirred up the political pot ahead of the Assembly elections next year.
The committee on external affairs is chaired by former Union minister Shashi Tharoor and has Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, NCP leader Supriya Sule, DMK's Kanimozhi, BJP's Varun Gandhi, senior leaders Amar Singh (SP) and Karan Singh, Satyavrat Chaturvedi and Raj Babbar (all Congress) as members. The meeting assumes significance as the Narendra Modi government had earlier expressed reservations over briefing the Parliamentary Committee on Defence on the September 29 surgical strikes on six terror launch pads across the LoC. The government later relented and organised a briefing for the House panel on defence on Friday.
Within hours of going public about the strikes on September 29, the DGMO had briefed leaders of political parties about the cross-LoC action.
