Hundreds of people including leaders of various political parties were arrested in Tamil Nadu on Monday during the 48-hour rail roko stir called by Delta farmers in protest against the Union Government's 'refusal' to constitute Cauvery Management Board (CMB).
Train services across the state were affected during the strike. Reports said train services were hit in Madurai, Coimbatore, Trichy and Salem divisions with most of the express and passenger trains running late.
Backed by various opposition parties including the DMK, Delta farmers belonging to various associations blocked train services across several districts and demanded immediate formation of CMB.
DMK treasurer and leader of the Opposition in the Assembly M K Stalin, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi president Thol Thirumavalavan, MDMK general secretary Vaiko, former Union minister T R Baalu were prominent among those who were arrested when they tried to stop trains at different places.
At Madurai railway junction, the protest turned violent after the police resorted to lathi charge to disperse the agitators who tried to break the barricade to enter the railway station. The police said over people were injured in the clash. Scores of protesters were arrested in Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Trichy, Tiruvarur, Karur, Erode and Salem districts.
