Thousands of devotees visited Talacauvery in Kodagu district, on Monday to witness Cauvery Theerthodbhava, which occurred, a minute a head of the scheduled time, at Talacauvery, the origin of River Cauvery.
Theerthodbhava was expected to occur at 6.29 am. The Cauvery Theerthodbhava, an annual ritual, draws devotees from not only Kodagu, Mysuru, Mandya and Chamrajnagar but also neighbouring Tamil Nadu and Kerala states.
However, the number of devotees from Tamil Nadu had declined drastically this year. Only a few vehicles bearing Tamil Nadu registration number were seen parked Triveni Sangama at Bhagamandala.
Former MP from Mandya and actor Ramya, who attended the event, said that she prayed for an early solution to the Cauvery dispute. Lok Sabha member Prathap Simha, MLA Appachu Ranjan and others were present. The district administration had made elaborate security arragements by installing CCTV cameras at Talacauvery.
Personnel from district armed reserve and the Karnataka State Reserve Police were pressed into service. The Kannada and Culture department has organised cultural programmes to mark the occasion.
