JD(S)president H D Deve Gowda on Monday said that he will not contest the next Lok Sabha elections. Announcing his decision, Gowda who is MPfrom Hassan told reporters in Kadur, "I am already 84 and not in good health."
Speaking to reporters in Shivamogga, Gowda said the state is badly in need of a regional party to safeguard the interests of people. Tamil Nadu has been gaining upper hand in the Cauvery water issue for the past several years due to the presence of strong regional parties in that state.
The parties that came to power at the Centre have been wooing regional parties for political gains over the past several years. Both the DMK and the AIADMK in Tamil Nadu have successfully utilised this. So, people of Karnataka should back the JD(S) in the polls considering the importance of regional party in the current politics, he stated.
Gowda said that though the BJP had won 282 seats in the Lok Sabha elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has formed the government at the Centre in association with regional parties as he has understood the importance of regional parties.
The JD(S)supremo said he will tour the entire state to strengthen the party. JD(S) state president H D Kumaraswamy will tour north Karnataka from November 1, he added.
The former prime minister said the Centre can't introduce uniform civil code in view of the country's diversity. Realising this, Dr B R Ambedkar had framed the Constitution to provide equal rights to all.
He said he would oppose any attempt by the Centre to implement it. Modi should focus on addressing problems such as poverty and unemployment rather than trying to bring in uniform civil code, he added.
