Vice Chancellor ofDefence Institute of Advanced Technology, Pune, Surendra Pal, on Monday, said, the country must set national goals like 'Swachh Bharat Mission' for the all-round sustainable development.
He was speaking during the inaugural ceremony of the third international Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) festival, organised by Global Stem States, and International Alliance in association with University of Mysore (UoM), at Senate Bhavan, in Manasagangothri.
The VCsaid, India is much ahead of other nations in textile industry, space technology, medicine and others, but, it has its own set of problems and the youths have a good opportunity to come up with solutions to the problems. "We don't have national goals like 'Swachh Bharat' in other sectors. If a country needs to become a specialist in biology, engineering, or other sectors, we must set national goals in the respective sectors," said Pal.
Pal urged the academicians to encourage students to think out of the box. Making a mention of Steve Jobs, he asked the youths to develop the habit of thinking out of the box to achieve success. Pal said, there is a need for change in the education system to produce knowledgable, skilled and employable youths.
Professor from University of Malaysia, Sabah, Nader Barsoum said, STEM aims to make education more effective to the societies, with emphasis on technology. "This includes programming, electronics, controllers and wireless communication. Since the future education will be based on technology, STEM supports any inventor to design a small prototype device to aid teaching, replacing the textbook. In addition, it encourages the young graduates to implement small prototype projects with few hundred dollars for education purpose, he said.
STEM festival includes energy conference, power control and optimisation conference, lab safety conference, education and innovation conference, corp science conference and a conference on game development.

Though the four-day festival is claimed to be international in nature, only five foreign participants took part in the event on the inaugural day. Even Minister for ITand BT, Science and Technology, Priyank Kharge, who was invited as chief guest, did not attend the inaugural ceremony.
The authorities claim that 800 people have been registered for the sessions and more than 15,000 people have registered for the 'Education and Technology Expo'.
According to the organisers, 5% of the people registered for the festival are foreigners. "On day one, 500 participants have attended and others would attend on other days, based on their subjects of interest. A majority of the participants are engineering students. The registration was open from three months," they said.
