Swaraj India, the party launched by breakaway group of Aam Aadmi Party led by Yogrndra Yadav, Prashant Bhushan, Anand Kumar and Ajit Jha, has decided to contest Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) which will held in early 2017.
In a statement on Sunday, the party has said that it will give an "alternative to the people because they are fed up with theatrics". The party has also said that it will explore possibilities of contesting assembly elections slated next year in five states.
The party sources, however, said that the party remained undecided about contesting Punjab elections where its rival AAP is said to be gaining strong ground and might spring surprises.
"Party general secretary Ajit Jha will head the team for municipal elections in Delhi. The team has started selection of candidates," said the party after the meeting of the Presidium of the party in Palampur in Himachal Pradesh.
"Delhi is now without anyone to look after it. The Delhi government, the Lt Governor and the MCD, all are indulged in manipulations and political game. The people are fed up with theatrics. We are entering into polls to provide a meaningful alternative," said Yadav in the statement.
The statement has quoted Bhushan as saying that every caution will be taken in selecting candidates. "There would not be any personality cult in the party," he said. The eminent lawyer has obviously targeted AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal.
Party sources, however, the party Presidium could not decide on what should be done in Punjab. Many rebel leaders of AAP in Punjab have joined the new party and are willing to contest elections. But, the party is moving slow because of the local factors.
It is in search of a strong team of local leaders who could take on both AAP and other political forces including Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal and BJP combine.
