Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will inspect alternative road and Metro routes to Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) on Monday.

Siddaramaiah's inspection tour comes a day after scores of residents' welfare associations (RWAs) and other organisations came together to form a human chain to protest the proposed construction of steel flyover between Chalukya Circle and Hebbal. The government has been justifying the steel flyover project stating that it would ease heavy traffic moving towardsthe KIA.

However, sources in the Chief Minister's Office said Siddaramaiah's visit has nothing to do with Sunday's protest and the growing public outcry to scrap the steel flyover project. The inspection tour had been planned three days ago, they maintained.

Siddaramaiah will be focusing on alternative road and Metro routes to link the KIA and this connectivity would be independent of the steel flyover project. The sources said the government, at present, was keen to go ahead with the steel flyover project.

During his visit, the chief minister will also have a look at alterative road links to the airport as there had been suggestions from various quarters including a route via Bagalur. The Bengaluru traffic police had recently suggested an alternative route to the airport via Betta Kote on State Highway-104 near Budigere Cross. The link road would will help in reducing the travelling time and distance to the airport for people residing in eastern and southeastern Bengaluru, besides easing traffic on the congested Ballari Road, it was felt.

Last month, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL)had put out nine alternative Metro links to the airport on its website and had called for public suggestions. Officials said Metro link to the KIA would serve as a public transport connection to the airport.

As far as the alternative Metro links to the airport are concerned, five routes are extensions of the proposed Nagawara line, which is part of the Phase II of Namma Metro. The alignments prepared by transport consultancy RITES, suggested two routes from Yeshwantpur and one each from Mehkri Circle and the proposed KR Puram line to the airport.
