The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has opposed the state government's idea of linking the proposed steel flyover to National Highway 4, saying it would add to congestion on the stretch.

The NHAI also expressed shock over the government's unilateral decision to extend the flyover into the national highway without consulting it. Officials were surprised at the plan to construct the steel bridge above the existing Hebbal flyover and extend it up to Esteem Mall.

NHAI project director

D Srinivasalu Naidu told DH that the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) had not sought the authority's permission to extend the flyover. He said all he knew was that the steel flyover would be up to Hebbal.

"We have not given any permission and we will not allow it to happen until the BDA gets approval from our head office in New Delhi by furnishing details of the project and maps. Unless we see the proposal, we cannot say anything. NHAI's permission is mandatory for any state government project involving the national highways," the NHAI project director said.

The officer was of the view that connecting the steel flyover to the 10-lane Ballari Road would cause more congestion and affect the smooth flow of traffic.

"The BDA has already created a mess at Hebbal flyover, KR Puram bridge and Yeshwantpur. The agency lacked long-term planning while constructing the four-lane Hebbal flyover. Despite sharing 30% of the cost of Hebbal flyover with the BDA, we were not consulted. This has now become a major problem for the civic agency, especially during peak hours. There is no need for a steel flyover. "All that they need to do is widen the Hebbal flyover with two more lanes," the NHAIofficial said.
