The Centre on Friday sought advanced environment-friendly technology from Germany to scrap old polluting vehicles and processing the waste generated by it as the government is embarking on a new programme to junk old vehicles.
During the meeting between Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, his German counterpart Alexander Dobrindt and the delegation accompanying him here, range of issues dealing with the transport as well as infrastructure sectors were discussed.
To scrap old polluting vehicles, the Road Transport Ministry recently drafted the Voluntary Vehicle Fleet Modernisation Programme (V-VMP), which is now awaiting approval from the Ministry of Finance.
The Road Transport Ministry expects that the proposed policy would offer a combined benefit of Rs 14,000 crore to the Centre and states and drive the auto industry growth by 22%. Gadkari also highlighted the Indian government's programme to encourage automobile companies to produce hybrid vehicles which use flex-fuel like ethanol mixed with petrol.
"He (Gadkari) said that German automobile manufacturers can be called upon to produce cars that can run on flex-fuel for India, like the ones being produced in Canada and the US," the statement said.
