Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav may be nurturing hopes to return to power in the state on the basis of development works during his tenure, but he may not occupy the top post even if his Samajwadi Party (SP) wins the Assembly elections.

SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav said here on Friday that the newly elected party legislators would decide about the next chief minister.

"The SP legislature party will elect the chief minister unanimously if we win the polls. There is a parliamentary board... we will decide," Mulayam told reporters. He said the 2012 Assembly polls had been contested by the party in his name. "I had made Akhilesh the chief minister," the SP supremo said.

Mulayam, however, asserted that there was no infighting within the family. "We have been united for the past three generations...we will remain united," he added.

The SP supremo also made it clear that his party would go it alone in the Assembly polls. "We will not have any kind of alliance in the state," he said.

He also heaped praise on tainted minister Gayatri Prasad Prajapati, who had been sacked from the cabinet by Akhilesh, but was later reinducted under pressure from Mulayam.

Mulayam's remarks come as a setback to Akhilesh, who was recently replaced with his uncle Shivpal Singh Yadav as the state unit president of the party.

A large number of his young supporters were also expelled from the party by Shivpal and are yet to be taken back despite Akhilesh's demand.Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav may be nurturing hopes to return to power in the state on the basis of development works during his tenure, but he may not occupy the top post even if his Samajwadi Party (SP) wins the Assembly elections.
