To combat air pollution ahead of Diwali, the Delhi government has asked Delhi Police and the Customs Department to implement the prohibition on import and sale of "harmful crackers" in the capital.

In letters to both authorities, it has asked them to implement Explosive Rules regarding fireworks which include a ban on importing firecrackers which do not meet the norms. It has also asked the officers from the licensing unit of Delhi Police to check godowns "randomly" for availability of imported firecrackers in the market.

"No importer shall import firecrackers from any country and Custom shall ensure that such consignment which violates the norm prescribed vide notification G.S.R.907 (E) should not enter Delhi city," said the letter sent to the police and Customs.

"Not only Chinese, there are other firecrackers which do not meet the norms and are banned for import. We had issued a similar notification last year also," said a senior official of the Environment Department.

He added that even though there is no blanket ban on firecrackers but most of those available in the market do not meet the prescribed standards when tested. It has also launched an anti firecrackers campaign to be observed in the festive season. The minister also appealed to citizens of Delhi for "lending their hand in making the campaign a successful one".To combat air pollution ahead of Diwali, the Delhi government has asked Delhi Police and the Customs Department to implement the prohibition on import and sale of "harmful crackers" in the capital.
