A BJP worker was hacked to death on Wednesday by a gang of assailants in Kannur district, two days after a local leader of the ruling CPM was killed in the district.
The deceased has been identified as Ramith (20), son of BMS activist Uthaman who was also reportedly killed for political reasons in 2002. With the state BJP leadership charging that Wednesday's killing was planned and executed by the CPM, security cover was beefed up in the politically sensitive district, also home to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
Ramith's is the seventh political murder in the district after the CPM-led Left Democratic Front government took charge in May this year.
According to the police, Ramith was attacked near a petrol bunk; he sustained serious injuries to his head and neck and died while being shifted to hospital.
The killing comes two days after K Mohanan, a local CPM leader from the district's Paduvilayi village, was murdered by a gang of six masked men in a nearby area, adding credence to the charges of a possible retaliatory killing. Mohanan's killing had prompted the district administration to clamp prohibitory orders in some parts of the district. The BJP called for a statewide 'hartal' on Thursday, between 6 am and 6 pm, to protest against the killing.
"The killing that happened in the chief minister's home village has the backing of the CPM's top leadership," BJP state president Kummanam Rajasekharan said. The BJP has been leading a campaign to highlight what it called the CPM's politics of violence in Kannur by taking the issue to the national stage, while the CPM has responded with charges of hypocrisy, repeatedly highlighting that it had lost more activists to violence orchestrated by the Sangh-affiliated outfits.
'CM's failure'
The Opposition Congress also raised concern over the killings with state Congress chief V M Sudheeran describing the murders as the failure of Vijayan, who also holds the home portfolio.
