The Talaghattapura police arrested two persons for attempting to extort money from jewellers by posing as journalists.
The suspects were identified as Rudrajith (26), a resident of Balaji Layout on Kanakapura Main Road, and Somashekhar (23) from Harapanahalli in Jigani taluk. The police also seized a car, a logo of Vijay News, a camera and fake identity cards.
According to the police, the two purchased gold rings at Mathaji Jewellers and Mahalakshmi Jewellers owned by Bakar Ram and Manikchand respectively at Vajarahall on September 23. They tested the authencity of the rings at Ayodhya Gold checking centre at Malleswaram and obtained receipts.
The duo met the jewellers on Saturday and introduced themselves as journalists from Vijay News. The suspects accused Bakar Ram and Manikchand of cheating customers by selling low-quality ornaments and claimed that they have the footage of a sting operation showing them cheating. They threatened to air the programme if the jewellers did not pay them Rs 50,000.
Bakar Ram approached the police and lodged a complaint. As per the plan, Bakar Ram contacted the suspects and asked them to meet him at 5 pm at a hotel and collect the money. The imposters asked Bakar Ram to pay them money every month. The policemen in mufti, who were present in the hotel, recorded the conversation between the suspects and Bakar Ram and arrested them.
The suspects were produced before the magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.
