Stung by criticism over the appointment of a relative of Sports and Industries Minister E P Jayarajan as Managing Director of Kerala State Industries Limited (KSIE), the CPM-led state government cancelled the appointment late on Thursday.
The appointment of P K Sudheer - son of Jayarajan's sister-in-law and CPM MP from Kannur P K Sreemathy - as head of the state government undertaking had led to allegations that he was picked ahead of more deserving candidates. Sudheer's mother Sreemathy was also health minister in the previous Left government in the state.
Jayarajan had earlier responded to questions on Sudheer's appointment by stating that he was yet to receive any "complaint" on the issue. When Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was asked by reporters about the issue, he said he was unaware of the appointment but would look into the charges.
A few hours later, office of industries minister issued a statement clarifying that the offer of employment made to Sudheer was "cancelled" on October 3.
"As the CEO of a prominent firm, he had applied for the position of KSIE MD. The appointment order was issued based on his qualifications but he sought more time before he could accept the offer. Since it was decided that the deadline could not be extended, the appointment was cancelled on October 3," the statement said.
