Signs of easing of tension on the international border were evident on Wednesday following orders by the state government to reopen hundreds of schools that were closed owing to apprehensions of a war.
The decision to reopen schools in the border areas of Punjab was taken following the approval from the Centre, said sources.
Interestingly, while children can go to schools, the government is silent on asking relocated people to return to their villages citing escalating tension with neighbouring Pakistan.
Opposition leaders question the rationale of the government to reopen schools if the build-up on the border was for real. If school children could return to normal regime in the border belt, Congress leaders questioned the government's intent on not shunning the "war hysteria" and ask people to return to their houses from camps. Close to 270 schools reopened on Wednesday.
All schools within 10 km of the border zone were ordered to close down a day after surgical strikes by the army across the Line of Control (LoC).
Punjab Education Minister Dr Daljeet Singh Cheema said his department felt a need to reopen schools in border zones given that many people did not relocate to camps.
