Health Minister Satyendar Jain on Tuesday appeared before the Income Tax department in connection with his investments in Kolkata-based companies under tax evasion scanner and denied doing anything wrong.
The ruling AAP called it another instance of harassment of AAP legislators on the lines of filing a false FIR against Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
"My life is like an open book. I have been an honest architect for 20 years. If you are bent upon calling someone a hawala operator, you may continue to do so. I will continue to serve people," Jain told reporters.
The Minister, who was earlier given a clean chit by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, said he was only summoned as a witness and not as an accused. "I have cease to be a director or a shareholder in the companies about three-and-a-half years ago," he said.
"They want to defame in politics," said Jain, denying doing anything wrong. He said the the I-T officials asked him about a few people and institutions. "They wanted to know if those people worked with me. I denied having any idea about these people," said Jain.
The Minister was summoned last week by the IT department which directed him to appear before the Investigating Officer of the case and furnish personal financial details and ITRs for the last four years.
Officals said the department reportedly recovered documents relating to some transactions being made by at least three firms and had a link to Jain. Jain has been summoned over proceedings against three firms Indo Metallmpex, Paryas Infosolutions and Akinchan Developers.
The Health Minister, accompanied by party leaders Sanjay Singh and Ashutosh, arrived at the I-T office.
"This is a case of harassment and he is being punished for his honesty. He is the most honest minister who saved Rs 400 crore in the construction of five flyovers," said Sanjay Singh said, likening the I-T proceedings against Jain with the alleged implication of AAP MLAs in criminal cases.
Singh defended Jain and said the Minister invested Rs 32 lakh over five years in these companies when he was working as an architect. He disclosed the investment in his election affidavits in 2013 and 2015.
"An attempt is being made to defame an honest person. The entire party is standing behind him," said Singh.
The IT department officials had claimed that they have received records of certain financial transactions connected to Jain after their counterparts in Kolkata recently searched a firm in connection with a tax evasion and alleged illegal financial remittances case.
