Doctors say that there is an immediate need to prevent venous thromboembolism (VTE) and also create awareness about it. This comes before the World Thrombosis Day which is observed on October 13.
Thrombosis is the formation of blood clots in blood vessels of the body. VTE is a life threatening condition which includes deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a condition where clots are formed in the deep veins of a limb and pulmonary embolism (PE) blocking an artery in the lungs.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, Dr Vivekanand, HoD, vascular surgeon, Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain Hospital, said that there has been a 10 to 12% increase of DVT cases in the city since last year. Dr Vivekanand explained that harmonal imbalances and consumption of oral contraceptives could put the patient at risk.
