The Congress on Monday called it "strange" to compare the black money disclosure of Rs 65,250 crore with a similar scheme in 1997 considering the size of the economy that has grown more than eight-fold in 20 years.

The government must not mislead the nation by comparing black money disclosures of Rs 65,250 crore with the Voluntary Disclosure of Income Scheme of 1997 which had led to unearthing of Rs 33,000 crore, AICC senior spokesman Anand Sharma said.

"In 1997, the India's GDP was $300 billion. Today, the economy is eight times bigger. Hence, the disclosure should have been in multiples of eight and not twice that of the 1997 disclosures," Sharma said. On Saturday, Finance Minister Arun Jailtey announced that the IDS-2016 had unearthed Rs 65,250 crore in unaccounted wealth that would get the government Rs 29,362 crore in taxes. The Congress on Monday called it "strange” to compare the black money disclosure of Rs 65,250 crore with a similar scheme in 1997 considering the size of the economy that has grown more than eight-fold in 20 years.
