Duo extort Rs 90L from bizman, greed for more does them in

The CK Achukattu police on Friday arrested two persons who had extorted money from a businessman, after threatening to kill him.

The arrested are Gurumurthy alias Guru, 31, a resident of Kumbalgodu, and Prakash T, 30, a resident of Sunkadakatte. Both are cab drivers and natives of Tumakuru.

The police have recovered Rs 56 lakh, two cars and a mobile phone from the arrested.

On August 30, around 9 pm, Guru called up the businessman and introduced himself as Magadi Ravi and that 60 cases were registered against him in various police stations.

Guru told the businessman that he had received a supari (contract) for Rs 75 lakh to kill him. He told the businessman that if he gives him Rs 1 crore, then he would not harm him, failing which he (Guru) would kill the entire family, police said.

The businessman managed to arrange Rs 90 lakh cash. On September 1, he called up Guru and Prakash. The businessman informed them that the cash was ready. Guru and Prakash asked him to come in a car to the Nagarabhavi flyover. When the businessman approached the flyover, he got another call from the two, who asked him to leave the cash in the car and walk for a few metres without turning back. As he was walking, they came in another car and took away the cash.

Greedy for more. they called up the victim after two days and demanded Rs 25 lakh. The victim approached the CK Achukattu police and registered a case. The police started tracking the mobile phone number of the extortionists. They traced the suspects near a hospital on Mysuru Road.

"We kept a watch on the two and soon picked them up," said the police. During the interrogation, the two confessed to the crime.

"Guru used to work as a driver for the complainant. A few months ago, he quit the job and bought a car. He was in deep debts and the money lenders were harassing him. Guru, along with Prakash, planned to extort money from businessman to repay the debts," said a senior police officer.

"They had spent half the amount on digging wells in their native place, clearing the debts and visiting temples," the officer said.
