Former prime minister HDDeve Gowda who began an 'indefinite' hunger strike to oppose the constitution of the Cauvery Water Management Board onSaturday, later called it off.

He also sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi's intervention to get justice for Karnataka on the Cauvery issue.

The party is strongly opposing the proposal to set up the board which will take over the management of the reservoirs in the basin. Mandya, Mysuru, Hassan, Chamarajangar and parts of Tumkuru districts which fall in the Cauvery basin, are the JD(S)'s stronghold.

Gowda staged the hunger strike near the Gandhi statue in the Vidhana Soudha-Vikasa Soudha premises, from 8 am. He called it off around 8.30 pm after Union ministers Ananth Kumar and DVSadananda Gowda, besides MLA Jagadish Shettar, met him and requested him to withdraw the protest. Gowda said he will send a letter to Modi through Ananth Kumar.
Gowda said he had called off his agitation as the Union ministers had come as Modi's representatives and requested him to end his agitation.

The ministers also assured him that Modi would ensure justice to Karnataka, the JD(S) claimed.

Sadananda Gowda told reporters, "The prime minister is aware of the developments regarding the Cauvery. Efforts are on to find a solution. Hence, Gowda withdrew his protest."
Deve Gowda told reporters that the attorney general should not have accepted the direction to constitute the water management board.

"The conduct of the attorney general gives rooms for doubts. The petition of the state is pending before a three-judge bench. How can the bench, comprising two judges, say the board should be constituted? The court direction sounds a death knell for Karnataka," he said.

Gowda said that during his last meeting with Modi, he had explained the poor water availability in the Cauvery basin. The prime minister should intervene so that Karnataka's plight is also seen and heard, he added.

JD(S) rebel MLAs including Zameer Ahmed and others joined the agitation but Gowda chose to ignore them.

Deve Gowda broke his fast after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah offered him a tender coconut.
Siddaramaiah met Gowda for the second time in the day, after the Cabinet meeting late in the evening.

CM meets Gowda

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah before the all-party meeting called on Gowda and requested him to withdraw his dharna. He was seen lending his ear to Gowda before leaving the premises. Congress leader CMIbrahim, who was once in the Janata Parivar, also extended his support to Gowda by sitting with him. When Gowda was seen with Siddaramaiah and Ibrahim besides a host of JD(S) leaders, it looked like a congregation of members of the erstwhile Janata Parivar.
