The police on Tuesday arrested three persons in connection with the murder of two women in Vasanthnagar on Monday. The arrested are Munish, 29, a resident of Akshaya Nagar in Ramamurthy Nagar, his brother-in-law Devaram, 24, a resident of Kithaganuru in KR Puram and Mahendra Singh, 29, a resident of Shanthi Layout in Ramamurthy Nagar. They are all natives of Rajasthan.

The police have recovered 3.5 kg gold ornaments and Rs 9 lakh in cash from them. Munish had slit the throats of Santoshi Bai, 58, and her daughter-in law Latha Dinesh, 38. During interrogation, it came to light that the arrested persons are pawnbrokers. Munish knew the family for the last nine years. "Munish and Latha's husband Dinesh were into pawnbroking business. On Monday, he went to Dinesh's house on the pretext of talking business. But he ended up murdering the women," said NSMegharikh, city police commissioner.

"At around 10 am, Munish and Mahendra went to the victims' house. They parked the scooter a little away. Munish asked Mahendra to wait near the scooter. He went inside the house and asked Santoshi to return some of the jewels he had pawned with Dinesh. Santoshi refused to oblige. They had an argument, Munish took out a knife and slashed her throat. Hearing her scream, Latha came down from the first floor. On seeing Santoshi lying in a pool of blood, she started shouting. Munish overpowered her and slashed her throat too. Both of them succumbed to excessive bleeding. Munish went into the bedroom and walked away with a bag containing gold valuables and cash," said Sandeep Patil, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central).

"At around 10.40 am, the duo went to Shivajinagar and handed over the bag containing cash and gold to Devaram. The latter kept the valuables in his house," he added. The three arrested will be produced before the court and will be taken into police custody for investigation. The police gathered CCTV footage from nearby shops and houses. Munish was found walking to the scooter with a blood-stained shirt, giving police the lead.
