Adopting a tough stance, the administration in Daradahalli Gram Panchayat in the taluk has decided to impose a fine of Rs 200 on those who are found defecating in the open.

The decision was announced at a gram sabha recently. Accordingly, Zilla Panchayat CEO R Ragapriya has constituted a team to implement 'open defecation-free Malnad' project. The teams will visit all the villages and demonstrate on ill-effects of defecating in open and change the mindset of the residents to construct toilets.

A team of officials, headed by Zilla Panchayat Deputy Secretary Rajgopal, visited Maggalamakki in Daradahalli Gram Panchayat and urged the open defecators to make use of toilets.

Some of the villagers promised to construct toilet for their use, while a few of them tried to put across the problem on non-availability of sand for the construction of toilets.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Rajgopal said that the Zilla Panchayat is contemplating to announce the district free from open defecation by the time of Gandhi Jayanthi.

"Under the guidance of Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer, teams have been constituted to include panchayat development officers and representatives of organisations to visit houses who do not have toilet facilities and change their mindset in favour of constructing toilets," he said, and added, "A few gram panchayats have decided to collect fines from those who defecate in open."Adopting a tough stance, the administration in Daradahalli Gram Panchayat in the taluk has decided to impose a fine of Rs 200 on those who are found defecating in the open.
