Cases of sex determination and female foeticide are on the rise due to negligence by officials and doctors, according to V S Ugrappa, chairman of the expert committee on preventing sexual violence.

At a workshop organised by the department of health and family welfare on Monday, he said, "There are 4,602 scanning centres in the state but the department has no tab on the number of equipment at these centres. There are portable devices as well. However, there is none to keep a watch," he added.

Ugrappa said that there were just 942 females for every 1,000 males in Bengaluru and that this was an alarming. Chairperson of the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Kripa Alva, said that even as there have been advancements in several fields, practices such as sex determination are still rampant."
