Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) Chairman Lakshman on Thursday inspected the Varthur lake following complaints of garbage burning and encroachment.
Lakshman, along with the KSPCB team, conducted a surprise check on the sewage treatment plants at nearby apartments and, water samples were collected for testing . On finding garbage being burnt near the lake bed, he instructed the KSPCBenvironment officers to issue notices to officials concerned.
Whitefield Rising members who were present on the occasion complained that garbage is being dumped inside the lake and waste-pickers segregate garbage on the lake bed after collecting it from nearby apartments and houses. They rued that waste segregation is not only leading to stink but also polluting the water body.
They raised issues of rampant encroachment, sewage flow into the lake and poor maintenance of the water body among others. Lakshman told officials to ask the Revenue department to immediately complete the survey of the lake and fence it.
