A brother and sister were killed while their parents and two children sustained serious injuries after the car in which they were travelling hit a road median near Sompura on NICERoad in the early hours of Thursday.

According to the police, the deceased are Shivakumar (in pic), 28, a mobile phone repair shop owner, and his sister Bhageerathi (in pic), 35. Their father Ramachandra, 75, and mother Basamma, 60, and Bhageerathis children Bharath, 12, and Bindushri, 10, sustained injuries. The incident took place while they were returning home after attending a relative's first year death anniversary in Kalaburagi.

Around 6.30 am, they were on their way home in Banashankari from Kalaburagi. As they reached Sompura, Shivakumar, who was driving, failed to notice the median and drove into it. As Shivakumar was speeding, the car rolled over after the collision. Passersby alerted the police control room, which informed the Thalaghattapura police.

All the six were shifted to Rajarajeshwari Hospital where Shivakumar and Bhageerathi were declared brought dead. Ramachandra is in a critical condition and is battling for life. Basamma and Bindushri are stable.

Bharath sustained severe injuries and both his legs were severed, added the police. Shivakumar drove the car all the way from Kalaburagi throughout the night and might have dozed off while driving, the police said. Bhageerathi, who was seated next to the driver, died from head injuries.
