Diplomats from the UK, Germany, Switzerland and France, besides scientists and researchers took part in a conference on Wednesday to discuss the challenges and possible solutions to tackle climate change with special reference to Karnataka.

'The European Climate Action Day: Challenges and Innovative Solutions' was organised by European diplomatic missions in Bengaluru along with Fraunhofer, the German research
organisation.

Dinesh Gundu Rao, chairman, Karnataka Climate Parliament Steering Committee, said that the state was progressive in adopting renewable energy. "Legislators are becoming aware about climate change and renewable energy. They are raising these issues in the legislature," said Rao, who is also working president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC).

A panel discussion on energy and water concluded that these resources are available in adequate quantity but the challenge is to increase the efficiency of use.

Mohan Kumar, chairman of the Indo-French Cell for Water Sciences of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), said, "We spend 100 MW of power to transport water into the city from the Cauvery. Almost half of this water is lost in distribution." Stressing the need to build sustainable cities rather than smart cities, he said that the effort had to begin at home with rainwater harvesting.

A competition held ahead of the event for Master's-, doctorate- and postdoctoral-level researchers from Karnataka to design a poster abstract on 'Innovative Solutions to Climate Change' was won by Anasuya Gangopadhyay from the National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS), Bhuvaneshwari S from Indo-French Cell for Water Sciences and Pratibha M D from the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru.Diplomats from the UK, Germany, Switzerland and France, besides scientists and researchers took part in a conference on Wednesday to discuss the challenges and possible solutions to tackle climate change with special reference to Karnataka.
