The BJP managed to calm down its hardliners, but the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) kept its avenge rhetoric high on Uri terror strike.

BJP general secretary Ram Madhav on Tuesday climbed down from his "for a tooth, the complete jaw" hawkish position to state "necessary response will be given at an appropriate time and manner".

VHP international president Pravin Togadia, however, continued to breathe fire. He sought suspension of all dialogues with Pakistan as one of the five other demands from the Modi government. Others are — suspend all memorandums of understanding with Pakistan on trade, commerce or culture, cancel all water treaties and burn bodies of terrorists on a heap of garbage and not bury them.

Despite pressure for an immediate tit-for-tat response, the BJP has come up with a calibrated approach, taking a leaf out from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'attackers will not go unpunished' comment to explain to its cadres and people that war with Pakistan cannot be an option.

The Modi government, BJP leaders argue, is trying to persuade the global diplomatic community to declare Pakistan a "pariah" so as to punish the neighbour for using terror as a strategic tool.

Madhav toed the same line as he stated that the anger in the country is well appreciated by the government. "The government has started to take certain action, like exposing Pakistan's dubious character at the international fora," he said on the sidelines of a seminar on integral humanism, a doctrine coined by former Jan Sangh president Deendayal Upadhyaya on making human the centre of indigenous economic model. But, Madhav also cautioned the neighbour not to indulge in "nuclear blackmail".
