The Karnataka State Agriculture Price Commission will chalk out a blueprint for the integrated farming system in arecanut in Dakshina Kannada district with a two-day technical workshop in the month of October, said chairperson T N Prakash Kammardi.
He told reporters on Tuesday that the blue print will be ready before the presentation of the state budget. "It will have details on required technology and inputs from officials to take up integrated farming system to double the income of the arecanut farmers. The market for the produce, price and value addition will also be given thrust," he explained.
A team of officials and scientists will visit Kerala shortly, to conduct a study on paddy cultivation, mechanisation to overcome the problem of shortage of labourers and incentives given by the state government for the farmers in Kerala. A team of farmers from five districts, under the leadership of Agriculture department joint director Kempe Gowda, had visited Kerala recently and had submitted a report to the state government.
"The commission's report to the government on cost of production of arecanut and coconut shows the cost of production of red arecanut as Rs 40,000 per quintal and white arecanut as Rs 30,000 per quintal. The commission has reiterated its demand for the setting up of an arecanut board for the welfare of the growers. It has also brought the issue of arresting the import of arecanut to the notice of the Centre to stabilise the price in the domestic market," said Kammardi. "The Minimum Support Price fixed by the Centre for milling copra is Rs 59.50 a kg and while ball copra is RS 62.40 a kg. The MSP for coconut is Rs 16 a kg. A study conducted by the commission, however, showed the production cost of a kg of copra including labour cost to be Rs 89. Hence, the MSP announced by the Centre is insufficient. The state government has submitted a proposal to the Centre to hike the MSP for coconut by quoting the cost of production prepared by the commission," he added.
The commission will release a report predicting the price variation of the agricultural produce and supply projection report to the State government. It will advise the government on taking necessary steps to provide more profit to farmers by creating awareness. The forecasting of the price will help the government tackle the situation on slash of price of agricultural crops effectively. The commission will submit a report on the price variation of 21 crops by October/November, said the chairperson.
