The Gujarat government has announced setting up of a three-member panel to probe the hooch tragedy at Vareli village, near Surat, that claimed 18 lives over the last one week.

"We have appointed a high-level panel to probe the matter that prima facie appears to have been triggered by consumption of spurious liquor. The team will visit the spot and along with a forensic report, it will provide the state government a complete picture of the real situation," Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said, while adding, "We will not spare anyone found guilty."

The chief minister had to intervene after locals insisted that the government admit to a hooch tragedy, which the local administration had failed to do.

"Prima facie all post-mortem reports suggest presence of methanol. We have sent the reports to Forensic Science Laboratory, whose report will help establish the exact cause of death," K Rajesh, in-charge collector of Surat, said.

With prohibition in place, the local administration and police find it difficult to explain the availability of spurious liquor and related deaths. The Gujarat government has announced setting up of a three-member panel to probe the hooch tragedy at Vareli village, near Surat, that claimed 18 lives over the last one week.
