Top officials of security, investigative and intelligence agencies of India and the United States met in New Delhi this week to discuss ways to stop terrorists from using Internet. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) hosted top officials of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and US Department of Justice in New Delhi to explore how agencies of the two nations could step up cooperation to prevent terrorists from using Internet — for mobilising fund, communicating among themselves, propagating terror techniques and radicalising youths.

Officials of other security and intelligence agencies of India also took part in the workshop, which was held ahead of the India-US Homeland Security Dialogue. Home Minister Rajnath Singh is likely to visit Washington DC later this month to meet US Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson and co-chair a dialogue with him.

Sources told DH that stepping up India-US cooperation to stop terror-networks from using Internet will prominently figure in the agenda of the Homeland Security Dialogue. The US and Indian officials, who met in New Delhi on Wednesday and Thursday, shared their experiences in efforts to disrupt the ability of terrorist organisations to use Internet to radicalise youths around the world and recruit them. "We must better understand how extremist messages and propaganda gain currency, particularly among disaffected and alienated young people," US ambassador to India Richard Verma said.
