Firing a fresh salvo at the Gandhi family, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy said controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik donated Rs 50 lakh to the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation in 2011. The NRI televangelist is out of the country since an accused in a terror attack in Bangladesh reportedly said that Naik's preaching inspired him to take up jihad. This led to an investigation against Naik and his NGO Islamic Research Foundation to ascertain whether Naik gave passion-rousing speeches and shared inflammatory literatures and sources of funding received from within and outside the country.
"Guess how that notorious terrorist compliant Zakir Naik gave to TDK's RG Foundation? Rs 50 lakes in 2011," Swamy tweeted. Congress accepted that the foundation had received fund from Naik but commented that it was an "unsolicited and stray donation" which was returned to Naik some months ago.
"It was an unsolicited, stray donation made many, many years ago. One has to be a soothsayer of an astrologer to know what this organisation would do years later. Some months ago, a remittance was made. Five-six years ago, nobody knew about this organisation," Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi, her son Rahul and son-in-law Robert Vadra have been at the receiving end of Swamy's rants. About a year ago, the BJP Rajya Sabha MP had accused the foundation of taking donations from foreign embassies in Delhi. The foundation was formed in 1991 to realise vision of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.
