Favourite S Chikkarangappa will face stiff competition from a clutch of emerging players as an open-looking Eagleburg Masters tees off at the Eagleton Golf Resort here on Tuesday.

Normally in any event at the par-72 Eagleton, Chikkarangappa starts the overwhelming favourite, thanks to his immense knowledge of the course and the conditions. Having learnt the craft as an eager child while working as a caddie at the very same course, Chikkarangappa grows fangs every time he tees off at this vast but easy-to-hit course.
Be it passion, determination, the will not to accede control at home to any of his rivals or to show his parents what a brilliant player he's turned out to be, the 22-year-old Chikkarangappa just gets into a zone when he enters the first tee box. Take the last two Asian Development Tour events he's competed as an example.

In 2014, having just turned professional the year before and looking for a springboard to take his career to the next level, Chikkarangappa targeted the TAKE Solutions Indian Masters. Trailing leader Abhishek Jha by six shots and nursing a wrist injury heading into the final round, Chikkarangappa blasted a brilliant five-under 67 to gallop home amidst huge cheers from caddies.

Last year, he showed tremendous grit to quell a stirring fightback from the in-form Shubhankar Sharma to win via play-off before sinking into his mother's arms in a flood of tears. He had entered the event not in the best of of spirits with his game suffering a dip on the Asian Tour but he erased all that anguish in four memorable rounds. Since his junior days, Chikkarangappa has lost just twice at the Eagleton but this time, he could face strong challenge from his Bengaluru pal Khalin Joshi.

Defending champion Rashid Khan, who had a fine outing in the Omega European Masters with a overall score of three-under 277 and is slated to reach here on Monday night, will eye another strong week while last season's PGTI Emerging Player Udayan Mane has the tools to fire big. Shubhankar and Jha will be seeking redemption while young Trishul Chinnappa and seasoned campaigner C Muniyappa appear as dark horses.
