The pandals of the 10-day Ganeshutsav, starting on Monday, will be based on popular themes like the burning issue of Akhand Maharashtra, various government schemes and Marathi film Sairat.

"There is a wide range of historical and contemporary themes this time," said Naresh Dahibawkar, president of the Brihanmumbai Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Samanvay Samiti, the apex body of Ganpati mandals in Mumbai. There are also themes keeping the forthcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections in mind.

Dahibawkar said several mandals will highlight the issue of Akhand Maharashtra (United Maharashtra). This is a major political issue in the state as the BJP, which wants small states for better administration, favours carving out the Vidarbha region, which is being strongly opposed by alliance partner Shiv Sena and Opposition Congress and NCP. Pandals are also being made around the biggest Marathi blockbuster of the year, Sairat.

Organisers will design pandals keeping in mind Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Swachh Bharat mission. Jal Yukta Shivar, the flagship scheme of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, which aims to make 25,000 villages drought-free by 2019, will also be showcased during the festivities.
