The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has issued notices to the Centre and the Maharashtra government over the plan to build a grand memorial of Shivaji off the Mumbai coast.
The West Zone bench of the NGT based in Pune sought clarifications on the environmental clearance (EC) and coastal regulation zone (CRZ) clearances for the project. The action came after an environmental interest litigation (EIL) was filed by Damodar Tandel, the president of Akhil Maharashtra Machhimar Kriti Samiti, the apex body of fishermen, and Pradip Patade, marine conservationalist.
"There are multiple issues involved in the project," Sarode said. "Raja Shiv Chhatrapati himself was against the misuse of public funds....in fact, one of his royal edicts was protection of environment," added Tandel.
