Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has welcomed the Mahadayi Water Disputes Tribunal's suggestion that the three riparian states of Karnataka, Maharashtra and Goa go for an out-of-court settlement by holding talks.
"The Karnataka government has been of the view that the dispute can be resolved through talks. I had repeatedly urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and help resolve the dispute through talks. I will again write to the prime minister and the chief ministers of Goa and Maharashtra... Karnataka is ready for talks," he said on Thursday, reacting to the tribunal's suggestion.
Siddaramaiah further said he would invite his Goa and Maharashtra counterparts to Bengaluru for talks. "I am ready to go to Delhi if the prime minister extends an invitation. Holding talks is important, not the place," he added. The counsels for Goa and Maharashtra have informed the tribunal that they would advise their chief ministers to hold talks. It's a good development, he said.
Asked about the accusation that Chief Secretary Arvind Jadhav has encroached on government land, Siddaramaiah said the Union government had extended the former's term by three months (till September).
The state government has started the process to appoint a new chief secretary, he added. The chief minister further said he would go to Delhi on Friday to hold discussions with the Congress high command on appointing heads of various boards and corporations.
