A judicial officer in Bihar has proved that flood cannot be an impediment in discharging official duties.
As the Naugachia civil court in Bhagalpur district remained submerged due to five feet floodwater for the last couple of days, the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) Santosh Kumar held his court on the national highway.
Since the court premises were flooded, boats received from Purnia were pressed into service to bring in relevant documents and papers from the civil court. Although there was no arrangement of chairs where the judicial officer could sit, the hearing took place on the highway. The magistrate signed the papers sitting in a vehicle.
As the hearing began, a murder accused Mohammad Junail and Birju Paswan were produced before the magistrate.
The ACJM, after hearing the matter, ordered that the duo be sent to jail.
Since the Naugachia sub-jail, too, is flooded, Junail and Paswan were sent to Bhagalpur jail. Later Amit Mandal of Gopalpur, an accused in a loot case, was produced before the judicial magistrate. Mandal ,too, was sent to Bhagalpur jail.
Besides these three accused, as many as 231 jail inmates were earlier shifted from Naugachia to Bhagalpur jail when the floodwaters entered the Naugachia sub jail premises on Friday last.
It is pertinent to mention here that in the last week, flood had wreaked havoc in Naugachia.
